New interview up with one of my favorite humans: Lindsay Nead
This morning on the blog, singer/songwriter Tristan Prettyman (And now, Tristan Prettyman Maris) talks pregnancy cravings, keeping in shape, tidying up, and how she and her husband keep their marriage top priority. Go grab yourself a coffee and enjoy!
1. First of all, how are you feeling??
I have to say, I am feeling pretty fabulous.
2. Has your diet changed at all since you’ve been pregnant?
Yes, I’ve stopped drinking wine and beer
Overall, not too much… About a year ago I went vegetarian, with the exception of fish like salmon or shrimp.
3. What about cravings? Still loving tacos?
Oh hell yeah! Tacos for days! We have been making these tempeh tacos at home that are out of this world. We buy masa from the Mexican market down the street and press our own tortillas.
I normally don’t eat a lot of cheese, wheat or sugar, but I have definitely been craving cheese, yogurt and cottage cheese. Nancy’s brand cottage cheese is my favorite because it has probiotics. I’ve also been craving sandwiches on sourdough bread. Any kind of potatoes: baked, fries, chips, tater tots.. and artichokes, I could eat one everyday. Early on I didn’t want any greens; green smoothies, or salads, but now that I’m in my 2nd trimester I can’t get enough of those yummy foods. Sometimes I crave gummy bears or sour patch kids, but I have a really hard time putting things in my body that don’t have a purpose. I want to keep what I eat as pure and efficient as possible, especially while pregnant.
4. You just got married last year. What does married life look like for you?
From the day I met Bill, it has been an adventure. We have so much fun together, and we are always laughing. We got married in August and found out we were pregnant in December so we haven’t had a lot of time just to be newlyweds, so that’s what we are focusing on now. Making us a priority, and really scheduling in quality time for ourselves. We are constantly on the go, but we are trying to slow down a bit and just enjoy being home. We like to cook, catch up on our favorite shows, take our french bull dog, Bacon, on walks and read books together (right now we are reading: The Seven Principles For Making Marriage Work - a friend gave it to us and Bill was so psyched to read it. He’s always saying how he wants to win at marriage. We don’t have any major issues, but we like to think of this as maintenance. It’s really important to stay connected, and nurture your relationship.
5. Any pieces of advice for other newlyweds?
Make time for you. It’s so easy to make plans with everyone else and never schedule anytime in for you and your partner. And don’t forget to have fun. I think my Dad said it best at our wedding when he gave his toast: “Love constantly, accuse slowly, forgive quickly and share everything. Be each other’s best friend, open your hearts to each other, and put your marriage first.”
6. What does a typical date night look like for you guys?
Oh we love date night! We like to go to dinner at one of our favorite restaurant in town: Le Papagayo, and then hit up Cineapolis for a movie. They have a cookies and cream milkshake that I cannot say no to.
7. What is your activity like now that you are pregnant? I saw that you were surfing a few weeks ago. Um, does that hurt!?
HaHa, people think I’m nuts!! But, no, it doesn’t hurt! I do warm yoga once a week, and my yoga teacher is actually pregnant as well! As long as it doesn’t hurt in class to lay on my stomach, I’ll probably keep surfing for as long as I can. I also train with my trainer once a week, and I do a barre class as well. And we go on walks a lot. I’m trying not to overdue it, but it feels so good to get out and move. It’s hard to stay still, when I’ve been so active my whole life.
8. What are you most looking forward to being a new Mama?
A new adventure. Being a beginner. I don’t know the first thing about being a mother! It’s one of those things that you don’t know how to do it until it happens. It’s not like becoming an expert in eating healthy where you can go to the bookstore, do some
research and go to the super market, and start cooking at any given moment. Every child is different, and every family dynamic is different. I mostly just can’t believe there is this little human inside me, growing… and it’s ours. It’s so surreal. I cannot wait to meet the little cutie.
9. Have you entered nesting mode yet?
Omg, yes! You know, I thought I would get all creative and be writing songs and lullabies and what not, but I have not been gravitating to any of that. I’m super into cleaning out the house and getting the baby space ready. I recently read this book: The Life-changing Magic of Tidying Up and it changed my life for real! I got rid of so much crap. I’ve also been reading lots of baby books, researching cribs and car seats and strollers and buying cute one-sies. I feel bad that I haven’t felt creative at all, but I’m just taking it day by day. I have a feeling once the baby comes, I will be bursting at the seams with song ideas and inspiration.
10. Any plans for delivery?
I’m in a bit of a interesting situation because my aunt has been my OB/GYN since I was a teenager. I will be delivering with her at the hospital. I thought about doing a home birth, or using a birthing center, but at the end of the day it was about being comfortable and I know I wouldn’t be as comfortable with anyone else, as i would be with my aunt. I plan to do it with no drugs and with as little medical intervention as possible. My aunt knows I’m a bit of a hippie. I asked her if I it would be ok to crawl around on the floor if I needed to and she just kinda rolled her eyes at me and said, “We’ll see about that when we get there..” My mom said that when she gave birth to me, she “had a cramp and out I came…” So, I’m hoping I have it that easy. My pregnancy so far has been pretty easy, but you never know. I’m trying to be open, unattached and not have too many expectations to how delivery will go. I trust that my body will let me know what it needs, and do what it needs to do.
11. Would you please make a lullaby album? I think Parker would enjoy dozing off to that.
Yes, that’s actually a dream of mine. Fingers crossed. I can’t force the creative process in any one direction, but I really do hope to make a kids album that’s versatile, enjoyable for baby and mom (Dad too, of course) and even people that don’t have kids.
